Origins of Shirk, The

From that which has been established in the shari'ah (prescribed law) is that mankind was - in the beginning - a single nation upn true tawhid, then shirk (directing any part or form of worship, or anything else that is solely the right of Allah, to other than Allah) gradually overcame them. The basis for this is the saying of Allah, the Most Blessed, the Most High:

Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleeased with him, said:

Ibn 'Urwah al-Hanbali (d. 837H) said:

I say: In it is also a refutation of some of the philosophers and atheists who claim that the (natural) basis of man is shirk, and that tawhid evolved in man! The preceeding ayah (verse) falsifies this claim, as do the two following authentic hadith.

Firstly his saying that he related from his Lord (Allah):

After this clear explanation, it is of the upmost importance for the Muslim to know how shirk spread amongst the believers, after they were muwahhidin (people upon tawhid). Concerning the saying of Allah, the Most Perfect, about the people of Noah:

It has been related by a group from the Salaf (Pious Predecessors), in many narrations, that these five deities were righteous worshippers. However, when they died, Shaytan (Satan) whispered into their people to retreat and sit at their graves. Then Shaytan whispered to those who came after them that they should take them as idols, beautifying to them the idea that you will be reminded of them and thereby follow them in righteous conduct. Then Shaytan suggested to the third generation that they should worship these idols besides Allah, the Most High, and he whispered to them that this is what their forefathers used to do!

So Allah sent to them Noah, peace be upon him, commanding them to worship Allah alone. However none responded to his call except a few. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, related this whole incident in Surah Nuh (Noah). Ibn 'Abbas relates:

The likes of this has also been related by Ibn Jarir at-Tabari and others, from a number of the Salaf (Pious Predecessors), may Allah be pleased with them all. In Ad-Durr al-Manthur (6/269) 'Abdullah ibn Humaid relates from Abu Muttahar, who said:

Thus the wisdom of Allah, the Blessed, the Most High, was fufilled, when he sent Muhammad, upon whom be peace, as the final prophet and made his shari'ah the completion of all divinely Prescribed Laws, in that He prohibited all means and avenues by which people may fall into shirk, which is the greatest of sins. For this reason, building shrines over graves and intending to specifically travel to them, taking them as places of festivity and gathering and swearing an oath by the inmate of a grave have all been prohibited. All of these lead to excessiveness and lead to the worship of other than Allah, the Most High.

This being the case even more so in an age in which knowledge is diminishing, ignorance is increasing, there are few sincere advisors (to the truth) and Shaytan is co-operating with men and Jinn to misguide mankind and to take them away from the worship of Allah alone, the Blessed, the Most High.

History

Shirk's Homemade Candies' founder, Elwood "Bert" Shirk, started the business in the heart of the Depression. In 1932 he purchased The Caramel Crisp Shop in downtown Marion, Ohio. Bert left a so-called secure job at the Susquehanna Silk Mill to pursue his dream to be an independent businessman. In those days all businesses and entertainment were located in the downtown area. One of the trade secrets was to cook the caramel syrup about the time the movie theaters let out, the aroma would flow into the streets, tempting customers in to buy. Bert popped his own popcorn and cooked the syrup in a copper kettle. This same kettle is still used today after three generations of confectioners.

Bert Shirk learned to make chocolates in the 1940's from a candy maker, Fred Chessy, of Richwood, Ohio. While also owning a sandwich shop in downtown Marion where the first homemade candies were made and retailed. This location was a teenage hang out during World War II. The candy cases that are used today at the current location, originated at the sandwich shop.

In the 1950's Wyandot Popcorn contacted Bert concurring the purchase of his caramel corn recipe and help them enter the snack business. Bert worked for Wyandot for four years and then pursued confection production as a means of his livelihood. Today Wyandot Popcorn is worldwide supplier of snack products.

In 1965 Bert retired and sold the business to his son Dick. Along with his wife Joan, they grew the business through out the 30 plus years. While supplying the central Ohio area with quality hand dipped chocolates for over a quarter of a century. Dick passed away in October of 2005, and will be sadly missed by family and customers alike. Joan is active in the business today.

Shirk's Homemade Candies now in the third generation of candy makers, following the sale of the business in 1999, to Rick Shirk. He has been active in the business since 1994 and looks forward to growing the business into the 21st century.

Shrek was originally set up to be a live-action/CG animation hybrid with background plate miniature sets and the main characters composited into the scene as motion-captured computer graphics, using an ExpertVision Hires Falcon 10 camera system to capture and apply realistic human movement to the characters.⎵] A sizable crew was hired to run a test, and after a year and a half of R & D, the test was finally screened in May 1997.⎶] The results were not satisfactory, with Katzenberg stating "It looked terrible, it didn't work, it wasn't funny, and we didn't like it."⎭] The studio then turned to its production partners at Pacific Data Images (PDI), who began production with the studio in 1998⎷] and helped Shrek get to its final, computer-animated look.⎭] At this time, Antz was still in production at the studio⎭] and effects supervisor Ken Bielenberg was asked by Aron Warner "to start development for Shrek".⎸] Similar to previous PDI films, PDI used its own proprietary software (like its own Fluid Animation System) for its animated movies. For some elements, however, it also took advantage of some of the powerhouse animation software in the market. This is particularly true with Maya, which PDI used for most of its dynamic cloth animation and for the hair of Fiona and Farquaad.⎹] . A Look Back at PlayOnline

After buying the rights to the film, Katzenberg quickly put it in active development in November 1995.⎠]⎡] Steven Spielberg had thought about making a traditionally animated film adaption of the book before, when he bought the rights to the book in 1991 before the founding of DreamWorks, where Bill Murray would play Shrek and Steve Martin would play Donkey.⎢] In the beginning of production, co-director Andrew Adamson refused to be intimidated by Katzenberg and had an argument with him how much should the film appeal to adults. Katzenberg wanted both audiences, but he deemed some of Adamson's ideas, such as adding sexual jokes and Guns N' Roses music to the soundtrack, to be too outrageous.⎣]⎤] Adamson and Kelly Asbury joined in 1997 to co-direct the film. However, Asbury left a year later for work on the 2002 film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and was replaced with story artist Vicky Jenson. Both Adamson and Jenson decided to work on the film in half, so the crew could at least know whom to go to with specific detail questions about the film's sequences "We both ended up doing a lot of everything," Adamson said. "We're both kinda control freaks, and we both wanted to do everything."⎥] Sherk was born on August 5, 1973, in St. Francis, Minnesota.Η] Sherk began wrestling and weight training at age seven.Η] He continued to wrestle for eleven years, and in that time he wrestled over 400 matches.⎖] After finding Greg Nelson's Minnesota Martial Arts Academy in 1994,⎗] Sherk began to practice boxing, shoot wrestling, and Muay Thai.Η] In 1999, Sherk defeated Roscoe Ostyn by decision in his first MMA fight.⎘] Although Rufus Wainwright's version of the song "Hallelujah" appeared in the soundtrack album, it was John Cale's version that appeared in the film in a radio interview, Rufus Wainwright suggested that his version of "Hallelujah" did not appear in the film due to the "glass ceiling" he was hitting because of his sexuality. An alternative explanation is that, although the filmmakers wanted Cale's version for the film, licensing issues prevented its use in the soundtrack album, because Wainwright was an artist for DreamWorks but Cale was not.⏁] shirk \shirk\, v. i. 1. to live by shifts and fraud to shark. 2. to evade an obligation to avoid the performance of duty, as by running away. one of the cities shirked from the league. shirk \shirk\, n. one who lives by shifts and tricks one who avoids the performance of duty or labor. shirk

"In Antz, we had a facial system that gave us all the facial muscles under the skin. In Shrek, we applied that to whole body. So, if you pay attention to Shrek when he talks, you see that when he opens his jaw, he forms a double chin, because we have the fat and the muscles underneath. That kind of detail took us a long time to get right."⎺] One of the most difficult parts of creating the film was making Donkey's fur flow smoothly so that it didn't look like that of a Chia Pet. This fell into the hands of the surfacing animators who used flow controls within a complex shader to provide the fur with many attributes (ability to change directions, lie flat, swirl, etc.).⎪] It was then the job of the visual effects group, led by Ken Bielenberg, to make the fur react to environment conditions. Making human hair realistic was different from Donkey's fur, requiring a separate rendering system and much attention from the lighting and visual effects teams.⎪]

It was a compilation film that featured stereoscopic conversions of various animated shorts and sequences, including the bar sequence in Antz. The film would have been re-released during the Christmas season of 2001, or the following summer, after its conventional 2D release. The re-release would have also included new sequences and an alternate ending. On The Road: The Beat Generation

Often seen as the precursor to the hippie movement of the 1960s, the Beat Generation was primarily a group of young writers who explored the strange cultural shifts in post-World War II America. The Beat Generation was one of America’s first counter-culture movements and embraced drug use, liberal sexuality and obscenity in their writings and works. Authors such as Ginsberg, Burroughs and Kerouac were some of the most famous Beat writers and were often the center of American controversy over literary censorship and obscenity. Many writers from the Beat Generation met at Columbia University but mostly ended up on the West Coast in places like San Francisco and Big Sur. Although the Beat Generation was mostly a literary movement, it has been long studied as a movement that heavily influenced the musically charged hippie movement.

After discontinuing the manufacture of tractors, Peter Shirk concentrated on his other inventions, manufacturing a tobacco cutter called ‘The Handy Tobacco Shear,’ which permitted anyone to cut tobacco without stooping over. It was basically a long-handled shear with one-wheel support and could be pushed down a row of tobacco. One specialty of the Blue Ball Machine Works after 1911 was the installation of electric light plants in homes andbusinesses throughout eastern Lancaster County. Peter Shirk kept two Shirk tractors for use around the machine works. The tractors wereused in 1914 to drag a large boiler weighing several tons to the shop for repairs. No Shirk tractors are known to have survived to the present day.The Blue Ball Machine Works is still in business at the present time, now operated by Peter Shirk’s grandson, George P. Newswanger.

I would like to thank Mrs. Esther Newswanger, Peter Shirk’s daughter, who provided brochures on the Shirk and Otto tractors and all of the photographs used to illustrate this article. The other major source of information was the back file of the New Holland Clarion available for research at the Lancaster County Historical Society, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
